New Delhi, 18th June. As Delhi swelters under scorching temperatures soaring up to 47 degrees Celsius, the city has witnessed an unprecedented surge in electricity consumption, reaching a peak demand of 8,647 megawatts (MW) today. This marks the highest-ever peak power demand recorded in the capital’s history, as confirmed by officials at 3:22 pm local time.

Just weeks ago, on May 22, 2024, Delhi first breached the 8,000 MW mark for peak electricity consumption. Since then, there have been multiple instances where demand has surpassed this threshold, highlighting the strain on the city’s power infrastructure during peak summer months.

The surge in electricity usage can be attributed to the widespread use of air conditioners and cooling devices by residents trying to cope with the intense heatwave gripping the region. This heightened demand has posed significant challenges to the city’s power grid, necessitating careful management by authorities to prevent disruptions.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red’ alert for Delhi, warning of severe heatwave conditions with temperatures expected to peak at 45 degrees Celsius today. Similar conditions have been forecasted for isolated pockets across several northern states tomorrow, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Authorities continue to urge residents to conserve energy where possible and take necessary precautions against the extreme heat, emphasizing the importance of efficient energy use during this critical period.

For further updates and advisories, residents are advised to stay tuned to local weather forecasts and official communications.
