Dr Mandaviya Inaugurates Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research in Kohima

NIMSR is not just a medical college, it is also a research institute. It will not only fulfil the purpose of imparting medical education but will also address the health issues of the Naga people: Dr Mandaviya

Kohima, 14th Oct. Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday inaugurated the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) in Kohima, Nagaland.

The event was attended by Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland, T R Zeliang, Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, and P Paiwang Konyak, Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Nagaland.

Dr Mandaviya emphasized that NIMSR is not just a medical college but also a research institute.

He stated that it will not only provide medical education but also address the health issues of the Naga people.

He highlighted the Union Government’s commitment to improving medical education in Nagaland, with an increase in MBBS seats from 64,000 to 1,60,000 in just 9 years. He also mentioned that PG seats have doubled in the same period.

The Union Health Minister encouraged students and stakeholders to expand their research beyond national borders and take advantage of opportunities abroad.

He informed that foreign language courses have been introduced in many medical education institutes to enhance students’ job prospects overseas.

Dr Mandaviya emphasized that the Union Government aims to strengthen medical, nursing, and pharmacy education for the holistic development and expansion of the country’s health sector. The goal is to ensure affordable and accessible healthcare for every citizen of India.

He also highlighted the expansion of Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country to improve access to quality and affordable medicines.

Neiphiu Rio expressed gratitude to the Union Government for fulfilling the long-standing dream of having a medical college in Nagaland.

He believed that NIMSR would strengthen the state’s secondary and tertiary healthcare and become a center of excellence in the future.

P Paiwang Konyak thanked the Union Government, World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and other partners for their support in strengthening medical education and health infrastructure in Nagaland.

NIMSR Kohima aims to provide holistic medical education, comprehensive healthcare services, and research facilities.

It is affiliated with Nagaland University and received permission to admit 100 MBBS students from the academic year 2023-2024.

The inauguration of NIMSR Kohima is a significant step towards improving medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Nagaland and the Northeast region.

The event was attended by cabinet members of the Nagaland Government, senior officials, civil society members, and special invitees.
