New Delhi, 1st May. In response to the verdict of the Supreme Court of India dated April 26, 2024, in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 434 of 2023, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a new protocol for the handling and storage of Symbol Loading Units (SLUs).

CEOs across states have been instructed to establish the necessary infrastructure and provisions to enforce the new protocols effectively.
As per the directive of the Supreme Court, the revised protocols are to be adhered to in all instances of symbol loading process completion in Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) conducted on or after May 1, 2024.
This initiative underscores the ECI’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of transparency and integrity in the electoral process, ensuring compliance with judicial directives for the smooth conduct of elections.
