ECI Shares Enforcement of Model Code of Conduct During First Month

 The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made public its enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the initial month of its operation, aiming for transparency and addressing any misgivings or insinuations.

Here’s a summary of the ECI’s position during the first month, which will continue to guide its actions:

1. Level Playing Field for All: The ECI ensured equal treatment of all political parties and candidates, emphasizing fairness in campaigning.

2. Respect for Legal Process: While upholding the level playing field, the ECI avoided overlapping with the legal-judicial process.

3. Vigilance and Accountability: The Commission maintained strict vigilance, particularly against any deviations from the MCC, with exemplary actions against violators.

4. Complaints Handling: A total of 200 complaints were filed by various political entities, with prompt action taken in 169 cases, demonstrating the Commission’s responsiveness.

5. Special Measures: The ECI took several special measures, including the removal of officers holding dual charges, transfers of officers with familial associations, and directives on defacement removal and transmission of government messages.

6. Firm Action: FIRs were lodged and notices issued against individuals for derogatory remarks or violations of campaign norms, reinforcing the Commission’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards.

7. Public Participation: The cVigil portal saw extensive public engagement, with over 2,68,080 complaints filed and resolved efficiently, contributing to a reduction in illegal activities.

8. Guidelines for Transparency: The ECI issued guidelines to enhance transparency in campaign communications, ensuring clear identification of publishers and printers on election-related material.
