Kulgam, 7th May.
A tense standoff erupted early Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district as security forces engaged in a fierce encounter with suspected terrorists, according to officials.

The encounter was sparked by intelligence inputs indicating the presence of terrorists in the Redwani area of Kulgam district. In response, security forces launched an operation aimed at flushing out the militants from their hideout.

“As security forces closed in on the hiding terrorists, they opened fire, prompting a swift and intense exchange of gunfire,” stated police officials, confirming the ongoing nature of the encounter.

The clash in Kulgam follows closely on the heels of the recent Poonch terror attack, which claimed the life of one air warrior and left four others wounded. The escalation of violence underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgency in the region.

The timing of the Kulgam encounter coincides with the heightened political activity surrounding the Lok Sabha polls, particularly in the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, of which Kulgam forms a part. Against the backdrop of electoral campaigning, the security situation in the region remains volatile, with incidents of violence casting a shadow over the electoral process.

As the encounter unfolds, security forces are intensifying efforts to neutralize the terrorist threat while ensuring the safety of civilians in the area. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operations to swiftly restore normalcy to the region.
