European Union to Launch Entry and Exit System (EES) on October 6, 2024

Brussels, 5th June. The European Union is set to introduce its Entry and Exit System (EES) from October 6, 2024, marking a significant milestone in regulating the movements of non-EU nationals with short-stay requirements. This new system is crucial for travelers planning trips from the UK or other non-EU countries, as understanding the guidelines will ensure a smooth and compliant journey.

The EES aims to enhance security and regulate migration by registering and monitoring the movements of non-EU nationals entering and exiting the Schengen zone. Scheduled for launch on October 6, 2024, the system will use automated IT infrastructure to collect and process biometric data and digitized travel documents.

Covering most European countries within the Schengen zone, including Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland, the EES excludes countries like the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus. Alongside the EES, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will provide a digital visa system for individuals from non-EU states.

Instead of traditional passport stamping, travelers will undergo biometric data collection, including fingerprints and facial images, and submit essential passport details such as name and nationality. The EES will track each entry, exit, and instances of entry refusal for non-EU nationals, allowing authorities to promptly address overstays or illegal entries.

Law enforcement and immigration authorities will utilize the EES to process data, monitor traveler movements, and bolster security measures across borders. The system’s automated functionality aims to prevent identity theft and other fraudulent activities associated with cross-border travel by effectively documenting visitors.

By efficiently tracking short-term stays of travelers from non-EU nations, the EES will contribute to effective migration management and border control.
