Former West Bengal Minister Biswanath Chowdhury Passes Away

Kolkata, 27th July. Former West Bengal minister Biswanath Chowdhury, aged 82, died at a state-run hospital in Kolkata on Saturday morning. Chowdhury, who had been battling cancer, was admitted to SSKM Hospital last week and passed away at 6:42 am, officials confirmed.

Chowdhury, a prominent leader of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), served as the MLA for Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur district and held the position of minister for jails and social welfare from 1987 to 2011.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a half-day holiday in all state government offices as a mark of respect. “I am saddened by the demise of former state minister Biswanath Chowdhury. Although he was a leader in the opposition party, we had a very good relationship,” Banerjee posted on X. She also noted that despite all efforts to provide treatment, Chowdhury’s condition did not improve.

RSP General Secretary Manoj Bhattacharya stated that Chowdhury’s mortal remains would be transported to his hometown of Balurghat for the final rites.
