Kolkata, 9th April: The political battle in West Bengal intensified on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of failing to make the state self-reliant in fish production despite high demand.

Addressing a rally in Purba Medinipur, Modi said West Bengal continues to depend on fish imports from other states, calling it a “glaring example” of policy failure under the All India Trinamool Congress. He questioned the government’s performance over the past 15 years, stating that even basic needs like fish are not being met locally.

Highlighting national trends, the Prime Minister said India’s fish production and seafood exports have doubled over the past decade, but Bengal has failed to benefit due to what he termed “misguided policies.” He also announced six guarantees for the state if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power and called for the removal of the current government.

Responding strongly, Mamata Banerjee rejected the claims, accusing Modi of misrepresenting facts. Speaking at a rally in North 24 Parganas, she said Bengal had earlier imported fish from Andhra Pradesh but is now self-sufficient. She also took aim at BJP-ruled states, alleging restrictions on food choices such as fish, eggs, and meat.

The exchange has added fresh intensity to an already high-stakes electoral contest, with both parties stepping up their campaigns. The BJP, buoyed by recent gains in neighbouring states, is seeking to expand its footprint in Bengal, while the TMC is aiming to retain its stronghold.
