New Delhi, 10th June.
Harsh Malhotra, a first-time Member of Parliament (MP), was sworn in as a Union Minister of State on Sunday in the Narendra Modi-led government, marking a significant elevation in his political career. Known for his organizational skills and grassroots-level work in strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi, Malhotra’s inclusion in the cabinet came as a surprise to many, earning him the title of a “dark horse” in political circles.

Fielded from the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections, Malhotra emerged victorious, defeating his opponent Kuldeep Kumar from the INDIA bloc by a margin of 93,663 votes. His victory paved the way for his entry into national politics, despite competing against established figures like three-time MP Manoj Tiwari and Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj.

A graduate from the University of Delhi’s Hansraj College, Malhotra further pursued LLB from the same university in 1987. His political journey began in 2012 when he became a councillor of the erstwhile East Delhi Municipal Corporation from Welcome Colony. Subsequently, he served as chairman of the civic body’s education committee before assuming the role of Mayor in 2015-16.

During his tenure as Chairman of the Education Committee, Malhotra initiated the “Suposhan” program, aimed at eradicating malnutrition among approximately 60,000 primary students in 398 municipal schools. His contributions to waste management and renewable energy initiatives earned him recognition as a proactive leader with a vision for sustainable development.

Apart from his political endeavors, Malhotra is also known for his philanthropic work. He is the founder member of “Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti,” an organization dedicated to promoting organ donation, reflecting his commitment to social welfare.

Born on April 24, 1964, in Delhi, Malhotra hails from an academic background, with both his parents being educators. His professional endeavors extend beyond politics, as he has been actively involved in the printing industry, advocating for the welfare of printers and serving as the President of the Delhi Printers Association.

Malhotra’s multifaceted career, characterized by his dedication to public service and community welfare, positions him as a promising addition to the Modi 3.0 cabinet, with expectations of contributing significantly to the nation’s development agenda.
