Goa Faces Shortage of 18 Judges Across State Courts

Panaji, 27th July. Goa Law Minister Aleixo Sequeira has informed about shortage of judges in the state’s courts, with 18 positions vacant across 10 different courts, including district courts.

In a written statement presented to the legislative assembly on Friday, Sequeira detailed the shortages: four judges are needed in civil and criminal courts in Margao, South Goa, and three judges are missing from the district and sessions court in the same town. Additionally, there is a shortfall of two judges each in the district and sessions court and civil and criminal courts in Panaji and Mapusa.

The shortage extends to various other locations, with one judge needed in civil and criminal courts in Ponda, Bicholim, Gram Nyayalaya at Valpoi, Vasco, and Sanguem.

The data, based on the ‘Unit System’ from the interim report of the National Court Management System (NCMS) Committee, follows directives from the Supreme Court. Sequeira explained that the Bombay High Court handles the appointment process for judicial officers in Goa under Article 229 of the Constitution.

He assured that efforts are underway to address the vacancies.
