Goa Sees Limited Adoption of Central Drone Farming Scheme

Panaji, 27th July. The Centre’s ambitious scheme to promote drone use in farming has seen minimal uptake in Goa, with only one beneficiary so far. State Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik informed the legislative assembly that Don Bosco Loutolim Society in Salcete taluka is the sole user of a farming drone, purchased with a subsidy from the agriculture department.

In a written reply on Friday, Naik explained that the scheme, known as the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), aims to enhance farming efficiency and sustainability through drone technology. The centrally-sponsored initiative offers financial assistance of up to 40% of the drone’s base price, capped at Rs 4 lakh.

Naik highlighted that drone farming has several advantages, including improved application of fertilizers, reduced health risks for farmers, and lower operational costs and time. Drones allow for remote operation, minimizing direct exposure to pesticides and fertilizers, thus reducing health hazards.

Despite the state government’s efforts to promote this technology, its adoption remains limited, with significant potential for growth in Goa’s agricultural sector.
