Government Renews Five-Year Prohibition Against LTTE

Chennai, 14th May. As the LTTE continues to incite separatist sentiment among the populace and strengthen its base of support in India, notably in Tamil Nadu, the Center on Tuesday extended the ban imposed on the group for an additional five years.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967’s subsections (1) and (3) were used by the Union Home Ministry to enforce the prohibition.

The home ministry released a statement stating that the central government believes the LTTE is still engaging in operations that jeopardize the integrity and security of the nation.

It claimed that despite losing the war in May 2009 in Sri Lanka, the LTTE has not given up on the idea of “Eelam,” or an independent nation for Tamil people. It has been secretly advancing this cause through fundraising and propaganda campaigns, and the group’s surviving leaders and cadres have also started initiatives to bring together the dispersed activists and revive the organization both domestically and abroad.

“The pro-LTTE groups/elements continue to foster a separatist tendency amongst the masses and enhance the support base for LTTE in India and particularly in Tamil Nadu, which will ultimately have a strong disintegrating influence over the territorial integrity of India,” the notification stated. It also cited other factors.

To fight for Tamil rights, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were founded in 1975. Based in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka, the group promised to create an independent state known as Tamil Eelam.
