Govt Appoints Ramesh Babu V as Member of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission

Ramesh Babu V. officially took the oath of office and secrecy as a Member of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) on May 21, 2024. The oath was administered by the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh.

Ramesh Babu V. brings substantial expertise to his new role, holding an M. Tech degree in Thermal Engineering and a B. Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Director (Operations) at NTPC from May 2020 until his retirement. His career at NTPC included various significant positions.

The CERC was established by the Government of India under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998, and operates under the Electricity Act, 2003, which superseded the earlier Act. The Commission comprises a Chairperson, three Members, and the Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority, who serves as an ex-officio Member.

The primary functions of CERC under the Electricity Act, 2003, include regulating tariffs for generating companies owned or controlled by the Central Government, as well as those with schemes for generation and sale of electricity across multiple states. Additionally, CERC oversees inter-state transmission of electricity and determines related tariffs.

The Commission is also responsible for issuing licenses for inter-state transmission and trading, adjudicating disputes, advising the Central Government on national electricity policies, promoting competition and efficiency within the industry, and encouraging investment in the electricity sector.

Ramesh Babu V’s extensive experience and technical knowledge are expected to contribute significantly to the regulatory framework and operational efficiency of the CERC.
