New Deli, 7th April: The Centre has extended the suspension of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for news channels by another four weeks, citing concerns over sensational reporting amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
In a directive issued on March 31, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting asked the Broadcast Audience Research Council to continue withholding viewership data for news broadcasters. The decision follows an earlier order dated March 6, which had imposed an immediate halt on TRP ratings.
The ministry said the extension was necessary given the evolving situation in West Asia, warning that exaggerated or unverified reporting by certain channels could lead to unnecessary public anxiety. Officials flagged concerns over “unwarranted sensationalism and speculative content,” especially during a period of heightened global uncertainty.
According to the government, the absence of TRP data is expected to ease competitive pressure among broadcasters, allowing them to prioritise accuracy over speed and dramatic presentation. The move, it said, is in the public interest and aims to encourage responsible journalism.
The suspension effectively removes a key performance metric in the television news industry, where ratings play a crucial role in shaping editorial strategies and advertising revenues. With no publicly available TRP data, news channels are likely to witness a temporary shift in content priorities.
The ministry has indicated that the suspension will remain in place for four weeks or until further directions are issued.
