The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken a decisive step to revoke the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar, citing reasons to safeguard the internal security of the country and preserve the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States adjoining Myanmar.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the decision’s significance in ensuring border security and upholding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to fortifying India’s borders. In his statement, Shah underscored the imperative to maintain the demographic integrity of the North Eastern States bordering Myanmar.

“It is Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s resolve to secure our borders,” Shah stated.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided that the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar be scrapped to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States bordering Myanmar. Since the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping it, MHA has recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR.”

This decision comes amidst ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and address concerns related to illegal immigration and demographic shifts in the North Eastern region.
