Group of Cooks Prepares Food for Workers Trapped in Uttarkashi Tunnel

Uttarkashi, 21st Nov.
A morning meal has been prepared for the workers who have been trapped in a tunnel in Silkyara, Uttarkashi for 10 days. The food will be delivered through a six-inch-wide pipeline that was inserted earlier on Monday through the rubble of the collapsed portion.

Teams of cooks are involved in preparing breakfast for the trapped workers.
One of the cooks mentioned that they have prepared Aloo-Chana Dal, and options like Khichdi and Daliya will also be sent as per instructions. They will also make Puri later on. On Monday, hot Khichdi was sent through the 6-inch pipeline to the stranded workers for the first time since they were trapped.
On November 12, a collapse occurred in an under-construction tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot, trapping 41 laborers due to falling muck in a 60-meter stretch on the Silkyara side of the tunnel. The trapped laborers are in the 2 km-built tunnel portion, which is complete and provides safety.
After yesterday’s breakthrough of the 6-inch pipeline, the horizontal boring by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) from Silkyara end will resume soon for the rescue of workers using the Augur boring machine.
The president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, Arnold Dix, arrived at the site in Silkyara on Monday to assist in the rescue efforts and expressed optimism about the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
After inspecting the tunnel and the area above it, Professor Dix seemed positive about the rescue operation.
“It is looking good, but we have to decide whether it’s good or a trap because it looks very positive. I have brought the best experts for this Himalayan geology here,” Professor Dix said.
Earlier in the day, Colonel Deepak Patil, the rescue operation in-charge, stated that their main challenge is evacuating the trapped men through a 900 mm pipe, which will be attempted later. However, food, mobiles, and chargers will be sent inside the tunnel through the 6-inch lifeline.
Regarding the food items to be sent to the trapped laborers, Colonel Patil mentioned that a list has been prepared with the help of doctors, considering the condition of the laborers and the available food options.
“We are using plastic cylindrical bottles with wide mouths so that we can send bananas, apples, Khichdi, and Daliya,” he added.
Rescuers filled cylindrical bottles with Khichdi to be sent to the stranded workers.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the evacuation work for the trapped workers is progressing rapidly. If any relatives of the trapped persons arrive at the site during this period, the government will arrange their travel, accommodation, and food.
