Gyanvapi Mosque Complex: Court Asks ASI to Explain Reason for Requesting More Time to File Survey Report

The Varanasi district court on Wednesday asked the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to explain why they need more time to submit a scientific survey report of the Gyanvapi complex.

The court has scheduled a hearing for Thursday to discuss this matter.

The ASI had requested an additional three weeks to complete the report, but the Muslim side objected to this request. The ASI stated that officials in Varanasi are handling the task and will inform the court about the need for more time.

The ASI began the survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex on August 4, following court orders.

The purpose of the survey is to determine if the mosque was built on top of a pre-existing Hindu temple. The ASI has been collecting data from various experts and tools, which is a slow and challenging process.

The court had initially set a deadline of November 28 for the submission of the report. However, the ASI requested additional time due to the non-availability of the technical report. The court then extended the deadline to November 28.

The ASI is not authorized to conduct any invasive acts during the survey, as ruled by the Supreme Court.

The Gyanvapi committee has also filed a petition against the high court’s order for the ASI survey.
