Hardeep Puri Commends Para-Athletes for Their Stellar Performance at 4th Asian Para Games

New Delhi, 2nd Nov. Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs on Thursday congratulated the para-athletes for their remarkable achievements at the Asian Para Games in China.

He stated that their achievements not only made history for Indian sports but also set a standard for aspiring athletes across the nation.

The Minister spoke at an event organized by IndianOil to honor the monumental achievements of Indian para-athletes at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

Rameswar Teli, Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Labour & Employment; Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of IndianOil; Deepa Malik, President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI); Gursharan Singh, Secretary General of PCI; and Avinash Rai Khanna, Patron-in-Chief of PCI, also attended the event.

Hardeep Singh Puri praised the indomitable spirit, resilience, and unparalleled determination of Indian para-athletes in the recent Asian Para Games.

He highlighted the extraordinary achievements of athletes such as Sheetal Devi, the world’s first female armless archer, who won multiple gold and silver medals, and Ankur Verma, who became the first Indian to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games.

The Minister also commended the performances of Sundar Singh Gurjar and Sumit Antil at the Asian Para Games.

He acknowledged the support of IndianOil in nurturing para-athletes in India and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting sports and athletes in the country.

Indian performance at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China:

The Indian contingent achieved unprecedented success at the 4th Asian Para Games, winning a total of 111 medals – 29 golds, 31 silvers, and 51 bronzes.

This outstanding performance surpassed the previous record of 72 medals in 2018, placing India firmly in the fifth position on the overall leaderboard of the Asian Para Games 2023.

The journey from three gold medals in 2014 to 29 golds this year reflects the dedication, hard work, and relentless spirit of our para-athletes.

India sent a contingent of 303 athletes, including 191 men and 112 women, making it the largest-ever delegation to this continental event.

The women athletes stood out by securing 40 medals, accounting for 36% of the total medal count.

Furthermore, our athletes set three world records, 13 Asian records, and 15 Para Asian Games records.
