Heavy Rains Lash Himachal Pradesh, Disrupting Roads and Services

The monsoon continues to bring heavy rains across parts of the country, with Himachal Pradesh witnessing torrential downpours. Rainfall exceeded the 200-mm mark in Kangra, Dharamshala, and Palampur, causing significant disruptions.

The torrential rains led to the closure of 150 roads in the state, according to the emergency operation center. Mandi district reported the highest number of closures with 111 roads affected.

Other districts impacted include Sirmaur with 13 roads, Shimla with 9 roads, Chamba and Kullu with 8 roads each, and Kangra with one road.

Disruptions to Essential Services
The emergency center also reported disruptions to 334 transformers and 55 water supply schemes across the state.

Dharamshala in Kangra district recorded the highest rainfall at 214.6 mm, followed by Palampur with 212.4 mm, Jogindernagar with 169 mm, Kangra city with 157.6 mm, Baijnath with 142 mm, Jot with 95.2 mm, Nagrota Suriyan with 90.2 mm, Sujanpur Tira with 72 mm, Dhaulakuan with 70 mm, Ghamroor with 68.2 mm, Nadaun with 63 mm, and Berthin with 58.8 mm. Among prominent tourist destinations, Dalhousie received 31 mm of rain, Manali 30 mm, Kasauli 24 mm, Narkanda 19 mm, and Shimla 17.2 mm.

Yellow Alert Issued
The Shimla meteorological office has issued a “yellow” alert, warning of thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places until July 12. According to the weather department, rainfall between 2.5-15.5 mm is considered light, up to 64.4 mm is moderate, up to 115.5 mm is heavy, 115.6-204.4 mm is very heavy, and over 204.5 mm is extremely heavy.

Drop in Minimum Temperatures

The extreme weather conditions have also led to a noticeable drop in minimum temperatures. On Friday night, Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti recorded the lowest temperature at 6.9 degrees Celsius. Similarly, on Thursday night, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti recorded a minimum temperature of 11.6 degrees Celsius.
