Guwahati, 9th April: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma cast his vote in Guwahati on Thursday as polling began for the 126-member Assembly.

Sarma was accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and their two children as he exercised his franchise.

Ahead of voting, the Chief Minister visited the revered Kamakhya Temple and other shrines to offer prayers.

Sarma, who is leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state, is contesting from Jalukbari, a constituency he has represented since 2001. He is aiming for a third consecutive term in office.

Polling commenced at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm across the state, with voters turning out to elect representatives in all 126 constituencies.

The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

The election is seen as a crucial contest, with the ruling alliance seeking to retain power amid a spirited challenge from opposition parties.
