New Delhi, 24th Oct: India has created 11 crore Farmer IDs, achieving its target five months ahead of the March 31, 2027 deadline under the Digital Agriculture Mission. Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the milestone as a step towards improving transparency and strengthening farmers’ access to government support.

The target was achieved by the night of October 23 through the coordinated efforts of the Central Government, state administrations and field-level officials. The Farmer ID initiative provides farmers with a unique digital identity intended to make agricultural services faster, simpler and more transparent.

Easier Access to Loans and Government Schemes
The digital identity system aims to reduce repeated paperwork and verification when farmers apply for government benefits and financial services. It is expected to simplify access to bank loans, Kisan Credit Cards, crop insurance and disaster relief.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, the verified database is intended to support more transparent crop-loss assessments and compensation. The system is also expected to improve the delivery of disaster assistance and strengthen transparency in crop procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Chouhan said the initiative would help farmers save time and money by reducing repeated visits to government offices and banks. A verified database is also expected to curb duplication and help ensure that benefits reach eligible recipients.

More Than 6 Crore Farmers Have Received Benefits
Launched following Cabinet approval on September 2, 2024, the Digital Agriculture Mission is developing digital infrastructure to improve agricultural service delivery.

According to the programme details, more than 6 crore farmers have already received direct benefits under various schemes through the Farmer ID-based system. Linking verified farmer records with government services is also intended to improve coordination between departments, policy planning and the monitoring of welfare programmes.

Centre and States Work Together
Chouhan credited the achievement to cooperation between the Central and state governments, Union Territory administrations, district teams and field personnel.

States and Union Territories are also taking steps, under applicable rules, to include tenant farmers and actual cultivators in the digital registry. The aim is to ensure that eligible farmers are not excluded from welfare and support programmes.

The Agriculture Ministry views Farmer IDs as a foundation for more transparent and farmer-focused governance. Chouhan urged farmers to adopt modern technology and use the schemes and services available to them.
