New Delhi, 11th May.
India is poised for a remarkable presence at the upcoming 77th Cannes Film Festival, with a diverse array of cinematic offerings and strategic initiatives to showcase the country’s vibrant film industry and creative talent.

In a historic first, India will host a “Bharat Parv” at the Cannes Film Festival, providing a platform for eminent dignitaries, filmmakers, and industry stakeholders to engage with India’s film fraternity. The event aims to highlight the myriad creative opportunities and talents within the Indian film industry, fostering collaborations and showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The centerpiece of India’s presence at Cannes will be the Bharat Pavilion, situated at 108 village International Riviera and inaugurated on May 15. Designed by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, the pavilion, inspired by ‘The Sutradhara’, embodies this year’s festival theme of “Create in India”. It will serve as a hub for various activities, including production collaborations, knowledge sessions, and networking opportunities for Indian filmmakers and international stakeholders.

One of the highlights of India’s cinematic representation at Cannes is Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light,” competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or. This marks a significant milestone, as an Indian film features in the Competition section after three decades. Additionally, films like “Santosh,” “Sister Midnight,” and “In Retreat” showcase the diverse narratives and talent within the Indian film industry.

The festival will also feature the poster and trailer launch of the 55th India International Film Festival (IFFI) and the unveiling of the “Save the Date” for the inaugural World Audio-Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES), scheduled alongside the 55th IFFI in November 2024.

Indian cinema classics, including Shyam Benegal’s “Manthan,” will be presented in the Classics section, underscoring the historical significance of Indian filmmaking. Moreover, National Award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan will receive the prestigious Pierre Angenieux tribute, a testament to India’s cinematic excellence.

Various Indian states, including Goa, Maharashtra, and Jammu & Kashmir, will participate to showcase the country’s diverse locations and film talent. Interactive sessions at the Bharat Pavilion will explore opportunities for film production, international collaboration, and India’s allure as a filming destination.

As India gears up for its moment on the global stage, the Cannes Film Festival promises to be a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the enduring spirit of Indian cinema.
