Information about a piracy attempt on the Fishing Vessel FV Omari was monitored on January 31, 2024. An Indian Naval RPA, conducting surveillance in the area, successfully located the FV Omari.

The INS Sharda, which was deployed for an anti-piracy mission in the region, was redirected to intercept the boat.

The FV Omari, an Iranian-flagged vessel, had been boarded by seven pirates who had taken the crew hostage.

In the early hours of February 2, 2024, the INS Sharda intercepted the vessel and used its helicopters and boats to pressure the pirates into releasing the crew and the vessel safely.

The ship successfully freed the crew, which consisted of 11 Iranian and 8 Pakistani nationals, along with the boat. The ship also conducted a thorough search of the FV Omari to ensure the well-being of the crew who had been held captive by the Somali pirates.

The Indian Naval platforms, dedicated to anti-piracy and maritime security operations, continue their relentless efforts to save lives at sea. This demonstrates the Indian Navy’s commitment to the safety of all vessels and seafarers on the ocean.
