Indian Navy Must Stay Prepared Amid Global Tensions: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, 19th Sept. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed top Indian Navy commanders on Thursday, urging them to maintain high readiness levels in response to global security challenges and to further strengthen India’s naval capabilities.

Speaking at a naval commanders’ conference, Singh emphasized India’s emerging role as a key security partner in the Indian Ocean and highlighted the Navy’s essential role in regional peace and prosperity.

Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to boosting the Navy’s combat capabilities with the induction of advanced ships and submarines. He noted that 64 ships and submarines are currently under construction in Indian shipyards, with orders for 24 more platforms.

The Defence Minister stressed the importance of continual introspection and preparation by naval commanders to handle the volatile global scenario. He pointed out that the strategic significance of maritime trade routes, coupled with threats such as piracy, hijacking, and disruptions in sea cable connections, makes naval prowess crucial.

Singh referenced recent incidents involving Houthi militants targeting ships in the Red Sea, underscoring the Navy’s vital role in protecting economic interests and ensuring smooth maritime trade. He praised the Navy’s anti-piracy efforts and global recognition as a reliable security partner.

The ongoing four-day naval commanders’ conference, which began on Tuesday, serves as a key platform for discussing strategic, operational, and administrative issues, reflecting the evolving geopolitical dynamics and maritime security challenges.
