Melbourne, 27th Nov.
Indian-origin former MP Dave Sharma has won a seat in the Australian Senate. Sharma, who previously served as the first Indian-origin lawmaker in Australia’s Parliament in 2019, will replace former foreign minister Marise Payne, who has retired from the Senate.

Sharma defeated former New South Wales (NSW) minister Andrew Constance in a vote by the New South Wales Liberal Party members.

He was backed by the moderates within the party. Sharma expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to hold the Albanese government accountable and fight for the households struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

He also highlighted the importance of serving in the Senate to protect the nation’s national security interests in a time of global turmoil.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton congratulated Sharma and emphasized the value of his diplomatic and foreign policy expertise in the current international circumstances.

Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley described Sharma as a fitting replacement for Payne and praised his unique perspective in the Australian Senate.

In 2019, Sharma made history by becoming the first Indian-origin lawmaker in Australia’s Parliament.
