New Delhi, 6th April: Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹1,364.45 crore to strengthen safety, signalling and communication infrastructure across multiple zones, marking a major push towards modernisation of the rail network.
The approved works include deployment of the indigenous train collision avoidance system Kavach, expansion of optical fibre communication (OFC) networks and replacement of outdated signalling systems with advanced electronic interlocking.
As part of the plan, Kavach Version 4.0 will be installed on 232 locomotives in Southern Railway at a cost of ₹208.81 crore, aimed at enhancing train safety and preventing collisions.
In Northern Railway, projects worth ₹400.86 crore have been sanctioned to upgrade the communication backbone through installation of 2×48 fibre OFC networks across over 3,200 route kilometres in key divisions including Ambala, Delhi and Lucknow.
Similarly, North Central Railway will see OFC expansion over 2,196 route kilometres with an investment of ₹176.76 crore to support Kavach deployment and improve communication reliability on high-density routes.
To further enhance operational safety, South Central Railway will implement electronic interlocking systems at 49 stations with an outlay of ₹578.02 crore. This will reduce manual intervention and improve signalling efficiency.
The projects are part of a broader strategy to modernise rail infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and ensure safer train operations across the country.
