Kolkata, 24th May.
The West Bengal CID on Thursday evening detained an individual in connection with the alleged murder of Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar, as disclosed by a senior officer. Authorities suspect a convoluted plot involving a woman luring the MP to a New Town flat, potentially leading to his demise at the hands of contract killers.

The detainee, hailing from a locality near the West Bengal-Bangladesh border, had crossed paths with one of the principal suspects in the case, the officer revealed. Investigations are ongoing to decipher the nature of their meeting and its implications, with the identity of the detained person kept confidential.

Preliminary findings indicate that the MP’s close associate, a US national, had disbursed approximately ₹5 crore to parties involved in the crime, as per a senior police official. The said associate, who owns a property in Kolkata, is believed to be currently residing in the United States.

Further scrutiny has unearthed that the flat in Kolkata’s New Town area, where the MP was last seen, was rented out to his associate by an employee of the excise department. The police have hinted at a honey trap scenario, with the MP possibly ensnared by a woman associated with his friend.

CCTV footage reveals the MP entering the flat accompanied by a man and a woman, only for the latter two to emerge later, reentering the premises the next day without the MP. Subsequently, they were spotted exiting with a large trolley suitcase.

Bangladesh’s Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, confirmed the MP’s murder on Wednesday, disclosing that three individuals have been apprehended. The state CID, spearheading the investigation, has uncovered blood traces within the New Town flat, alongside several plastic bags believed to have been utilized for disposal.

Per police assertions, circumstantial evidence suggests the MP was strangled before his body was dismembered, with flesh potentially mixed with turmeric powder to impede decomposition. Mobile messages purportedly sent from the MP’s phone posthumously aimed to mislead his contacts about his whereabouts.

The search for the missing MP commenced after Gopal Biswas, a local resident and acquaintance, reported his disappearance. Anar had purportedly arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment, last seen departing for a doctor’s appointment on May 13.

Biswas, alarmed by Anar’s prolonged absence, filed a missing complaint on May 18, prompting investigations into the convoluted circumstances surrounding the MP’s demise.
