External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar defended the implementation of the Agniveer Scheme in India, which abruptly stopped recruiting military personnel from Nepal. He stated that New Delhi will reform its policies with a focus on Indian interests, emphasizing that Indian decisions cannot be influenced by others’ interests.

During an interaction with students at Gargi College in New Delhi, EAM Jaishankar explained the rationale behind the Agniveer Scheme, stating that it was implemented for the benefit of India. He emphasized that any reforms, including Agniveer, will prioritize Indian interests.

Jaishankar highlighted that India will always prioritize its own interests when making decisions, regardless of the impact on others. He reiterated that India will decide what is best for itself.

The Union Cabinet approved the AGNIPATH recruitment scheme on June 14, 2022, allowing Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces for four years under the title of Agniveers. The scheme, implemented in September 2022, led to the cessation of military recruitment from Nepal.

Jaishankar also addressed the diplomatic tensions with Maldives, emphasizing the importance of maintaining relationships with neighboring countries despite differing viewpoints. He highlighted the need for neighbors to remain connected despite political differences.

As Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer visited India to address strained ties, India committed to replacing its military personnel in Maldives by May 10. The replacement process was discussed during the 4th meeting of the bilateral High-Level Core Group between India and Maldives.

Jaishankar also discussed the complexities of managing relationships with neighboring countries, acknowledging the political intricacies involved. He noted that dealing with neighbors often requires balancing interests and navigating political challenges.

Despite potential negativity towards India from some neighbors, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of maintaining relationships and addressing any unfavorable opinions that may arise.
