Journalists Seek Action Against Congress Over Alleged Misconduct in US

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 18th Sept. A group of journalists submitted a memorandum to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, demanding action against Congress functionaries for their alleged misbehavior with a media person during Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to the United States.

Vaishnaw assured that he would take serious cognizance of the issue and forward the memorandum to the Press Council of India for appropriate action.

The complaint revolves around an incident involving “India Today” correspondent Rohit Sharma, who claims he was assaulted by Congress workers while interviewing Indian Overseas Congress chairperson Sam Pitroda. Sharma alleges that his mobile phone was seized and he was coerced into deleting the interview footage.

In response, the National Press Club of the US issued a statement condemning the actions of Congress’s security team, which it claims may have breached the First Amendment rights of the journalist.

Emily Wilkins, president of the National Press Club, emphasized that the security team had no authority to interfere with the content or duration of the interview and should respect the First Amendment protections afforded to journalists in the US.

Vaishnaw has also called on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to address the matter.
