New Delhi, 1st Nov. Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew was on Wednesday appointed as the acting chief justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This comes as the current chief justice, Justice Sanjib Banerjee, demits office this evening.

According to a notification from the law ministry, Justice Thangkhiew, who is currently a judge of the Meghalaya High Court, will assume the role of acting chief justice starting from tomorrow.

This is not the first time Justice Thangkhiew has taken on this role. In November 2021, when Justice Ranjit V More retired as the chief justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Justice Thangkhiew was appointed as the acting chief justice at that time also.

Justice Banerjee, who was previously the chief justice of the Madras High Court, faced controversy when the Supreme Court Collegium decided to transfer him to the Meghalaya HC. There were both supporters and opponents of this decision. He was sent to the Meghalaya HC on November 15, 2021.
