Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Releases Commemorative Coin to Mark Kalaignar M Karunanidhi’s Birth Centenary in Chennai

Chennai, 18th August. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released a commemorative coin on August 18, 2024, in Chennai to honor the birth centenary of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, former five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

In his speech, Singh described Karunanidhi as a revered leader, an able administrator, and a champion of social justice.

Highlighting Karunanidhi’s dedication to India’s unity, Singh said, “While deeply rooted in Tamil identity, Thiru Karunanidhi never allowed regionalism to undermine national unity. His call for state rights exemplified cooperative federalism and showcased the strength of India’s democracy.”

He further emphasized Karunanidhi’s role in advancing education, gender equality, and welfare for marginalized communities, noting his significant reforms such as enacting 33% reservation for women in local bodies and establishing welfare boards for unorganized workers.

Singh praised the former CM’s focus on regional development, particularly through his initiatives in education and infrastructure, which contributed to national progress. He added, “His legacy exemplifies cooperative federalism, proving that regional development is integral to national growth.”

Speaking on the current government’s approach, Singh highlighted the Modi-led government’s commitment to democracy and cooperative federalism, showcasing projects like the Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as prime examples of regional and national development.

Kalaignar Karunanidhi, also a prolific writer and poet, was lauded for his contributions to Tamil literature and cinema. His efforts to promote the Tamil language and culture were rooted in his belief that preserving cultural identity is crucial to India’s broader identity.

The event, organized by the Tamil Nadu government, was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Shri MK Stalin, Union Minister Dr. L. Murugan, and other dignitaries.
