West Bengal, 20th May. On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received a legal letter from Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj of Murshidabad’s Bharat Sevashram Sangha, requesting an apology for her purportedly disparaging comments on the organization.

While acknowledging that he had given Banerjee a legal notice, Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj, better known as Kartik Maharaj, told PTI, “I wouldn’t have been concerned if Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had personally defamed me.” Since our purpose as spiritual leaders is to assist the people, personal criticism has no effect on us. It is deplorable that she disparaged the organization, nevertheless.”

However, Swami Biswatmananda Maharaj, national secretary of the Sangha, asserted that he was not aware of the problem.

In response, Banerjee’s remarks were denounced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said that threats are being made against these socio-religious organizations in an effort to “appease” a particular voter base.

Modi had criticized the TMC on Sunday during a rally in Purulia for going beyond the pale of propriety by “spreading falsehoods against ISKCON, Ramakrishna Mission, and Bharat Sevashram Sangha.”

Banerjee made the following accusation on Saturday during an election rally in Goghat, which is part of the Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency: “Some monks from the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha are working under the influence of BJP leaders in Delhi.” Not all temple managers engage in such activities, although those who do are engaged in admirable spiritual activity. This can’t happen. We honor the monks.
