Kejriwal to Walk Out of Tihar Jail Today Amid Water Crisis Protest and Legal Challenges

New Delhi, 21st June. Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister, is set to walk out of Tihar jail today following his bail in a corruption case linked to the Delhi liquor policy. The Delhi court granted bail after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) failed to substantiate allegations against him, though the agency has contested this decision in the Delhi High Court.

Ahead of Kejriwal’s release this evening, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders will protest the severe water shortage in Delhi. Water Minister Atishi and Sunita Kejriwal, his wife, will commence an indefinite hunger strike at Raj Ghat today.

Delhi is reeling under a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, exacerbating the water crisis. The Delhi government has approached the Supreme Court, alleging Haryana’s obstruction of water supply to the capital. Atishi emphasized, “Until Haryana releases water into the Yamuna, Delhi’s water shortage will persist.”

At 4 pm, Atishi and other AAP leaders will gather at Tihar jail to welcome Kejriwal upon his release.

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the ED over money laundering allegations related to the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy, which was subsequently revoked due to objections from the Lieutenant Governor. The ED claims funds from liquor sellers were used for AAP’s Goa campaign under Kejriwal’s leadership.

Kejriwal and AAP have accused the Centre of targeting opposition leaders with baseless charges. Yesterday, the court granted bail on a ₹1 lakh bond with conditions barring him from hindering the investigation or influencing witnesses. Kejriwal must also appear in court as required and cooperate with ongoing inquiries.
