Mirzapur, 11th April: A 40-year-old lawyer, Rajiv Singh, was shot dead in broad daylight in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur on Saturday, in a shocking incident captured on CCTV.
According to police, two men arrived on a motorcycle and targeted Singh while he was out on a morning walk. One of the attackers got off the bike and fired at him using a crude pistol, killing him on the spot.
The CCTV footage shows a dramatic turn of events immediately after the shooting. As the assailant rushed back to escape, the motorcycle reportedly failed to start, forcing the duo to remain at the spot for several minutes. During this time, locals cautiously approached but retreated when one of the attackers brandished the weapon.
After repeated attempts, the bike eventually started, allowing the attackers to flee.
Police officials said a case has been registered and five teams have been constituted to track down the accused. A senior officer indicated that initial findings suggest a possible village-level dispute, though all angles are being thoroughly investigated.
“Our team has obtained credible leads and is actively pursuing the case. Strict action will be taken against those involved,” the officer said.
It has also emerged that Singh had earlier expressed apprehension of an attack, raising concerns over prior threats and security.
The incident triggered tension in the area, with hundreds of locals gathering at the crime scene.
Meanwhile, opposition leader IP Singh criticised the state government, alleging a deterioration in law and order and claiming that criminals are “roaming free.”
