Legal Battle Over ‘Maharaj’: Netflix Film’s Release Faces Sectarian Challenge

GG News Bureau
Ahmedabad, 20th June. The fate of the Netflix film ‘Maharaj’, intended to mark the debut of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid, hangs in the balance following objections from the Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect. Allegations surfaced that the film misrepresents their religious beliefs, prompting the Gujarat High Court to halt its release a day before its scheduled June 14th premiere.

Directed by Siddarth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, ‘Maharaj’ delves into the 1862 Maharaj libel case. This historical legal battle saw a journalist challenging the Vallabhacharya sect, accusing its leader, Jadunathji Maharaj, of exploiting female devotees under the guise of religious practices. Despite the sensational trial, the case concluded unfavorably for the spiritual leader, highlighting the significance of press freedom and scrutiny of religious figures in India.

The controversy intensified online with hashtags like “Ban Netflix” and “Ban Maharaj” trending as detractors expressed concerns over potential religious insensitivity. Members of the Pustimargi sect argued that the film’s portrayal could distort their religious practices and provoke unrest.

In response to the legal challenge, a single-judge bench led by Justice Sangeeta Vishen is expected to view the film today before issuing a verdict. Netflix and Yash Raj Films have provided submissions to address the objections raised, hoping to secure the film’s release amidst ongoing controversy.
