Low Bill Payments Cause Major Concern for Tripura State Electricity Corporation

Agartala, 3rd August.
Non-payment of electricity bills by a significant portion of consumers has become a major issue for the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), according to an official statement on Saturday.

Out of the total 6,00,128 consumers, only 2,39,289, or approximately 39.87%, paid their electricity bills for June. Despite disconnecting over 80,000 connections due to non-payment, only 796 defaulters made payments against their pending bills during the same period.

“The pending electricity bills of consumers have become a huge burden for the state electricity utility. Around 40 percent of the total consumers have paid electricity bills while the remaining families did not make payment in June,” said TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu to PTI.

He mentioned that although steps like disconnection of electricity connections have been taken to improve bill collection, there has been no significant change as many consumers continue to avoid timely payments, adversely impacting TSECL’s financial health.

“We are working on how to encourage the consumers to ensure timely payment of bills. TSECL can’t force any customers to pay the bills. Chief Minister Manik Saha is scheduled to hold a meeting to review the activities and future plan of the power sector on Monday. Hope this issue will come up for discussion in the meeting,” he added.
