Manipur CM N Biren Singh Pledges Peace Restoration Amid Ethnic Conflict

Imphal, 30th August. With ethnic violence in Manipur gradually subsiding, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has committed to restoring peace in the state within six months with the assistance of the central government. Singh, who has faced criticism but remains resolute, also emphasized his intention to remain in office, asserting that he has neither committed any crime nor been involved in scandals.

In a recent interview with PTI, Singh disclosed that he has appointed Dinganglung Gangmei, a Naga MLA and chairman of the Hill Area Committee, as an emissary to facilitate talks between Kuki-zo and Meitei leaders. The clashes between these ethnic groups, which began in May 2023, have resulted in 226 deaths, according to official figures.

“Dialogue is the only way to resolve this conflict,” Singh stated, highlighting the critical role of communication in addressing the issues. He expressed optimism that, with the involvement of the central government, peace could be achieved within 5-6 months.

Singh stressed that he does not want to be seen as representing only the Meitei community, emphasizing his role as Chief Minister for all. He noted that while Imphal appears to be returning to normalcy, the surrounding hills remain restricted to Kuki inhabitants.

Reflecting on the origins of the conflict, Singh attributed part of the unrest to his previous term as Chief Minister, during which he took strong action against illegal drug trade and migration from Myanmar. He suggested that those affected by these measures may have contributed to the current unrest by inciting Kuki-Meitei clashes. The conflict has exacerbated due to concerns over illegal settlements and the controversy surrounding the Manipur High Court’s recommendation for Scheduled Tribe status for Meiteis, which was later withdrawn.

Singh defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the crisis, pointing out that while Modi has not personally visited Manipur, his administration has provided significant support through the Home Minister and other measures.

Singh also addressed concerns about pro-Meitei militant groups, such as Arambai Tengoll, stating that he has firmly opposed any extremist or communal actions. He emphasized that such groups must support the government and refrain from any anti-national activities.

Reiterating his commitment to Manipur, Singh rejected calls for his resignation, asserting that he has acted to protect the state from illegal activities and ensure its safety. He also opposed demands for a separate administration for the Kukis, asserting that the state’s unity is paramount while remaining open to development through autonomous councils and special packages from the central government.
