Manipur Lifts Ban on Broadband Services with Conditions, Mobile Internet Still Suspended

GG News Bureau
Imphal, 13th Sept. Three days after imposing a temporary internet ban, the Manipur government lifted restrictions on broadband services in five valley districts, while mobile internet services remain suspended. The ban was initially enforced in response to violent student protests demanding the removal of key security officials.

A notification issued by Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar stated that broadband services, including ILL and FTTH, will be restored “conditionally.” Users must adhere to strict guidelines, including the use of static IP addresses, prohibition of Wi-Fi hotspots, and blocking of social media and VPNs at the local level.

The state government continues to suspend mobile internet data due to concerns over the spread of disinformation through social media, which could incite unrest and lead to further violence.

The internet ban was implemented on September 10 following clashes between students and security forces. Over 80 people, including students and police, were injured during the protests.

In related developments, Manipur Police recovered a 7.5-foot country-made rocket during security operations in Churachandpur district. Authorities also seized various weapons, including a modified M-16 rifle, mortars, and bomb launchers.

The internet restrictions are expected to remain in place until September 15, with the state government monitoring the situation closely.
