Minister of State for Culture & External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi on Sunday unveiled a commemorative coin of Rs 200/- and a currency coin of Rs 10/- to mark the bicentennial birth anniversary of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji.

The event, graced by His Holiness Sri Satguru Udey Singh Ji, the present Guru of the Namdhari sect, paid homage to the revered spiritual leader’s contributions.

Minister Lekhi, reflecting on Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji’s pivotal role in India’s freedom movement, lauded him as a visionary philanthropist, thinker, and social reformer. She emphasized his advocacy for non-cooperation and swadeshi as potent tools in the struggle for independence, urging citizens to uphold Indian values and support indigenous products.

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji’s tireless efforts in championing social causes, including the abolition of the girl child infanticide, eradication of Sati Pratha, and advocacy for equal education rights for girls, were highlighted by Minister Lekhi. Notably, he set the precedent for gender equality by fixing the marriage age at 18 for girls and 20 for boys as early as 1857.

Despite facing exile to Myanmar in 1872, Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji’s teachings of sacrifice, cooperation, and self-reliance continue to resonate today, urged Minister Lekhi, underscoring the enduring relevance of his principles in contemporary times.

A pivotal aspect of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji’s legacy lies in his role in the printing of the Holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib on lithography, a milestone that reverberated across India and beyond, reiterated Minister Lekhi, underscoring his global impact.

The occasion also marked the 208th Parkash Purb celebration at the Namdhari Gurdwara in Ramesh Nagar, New Delhi, where thousands of Sikhs, leaders, and scholars gathered to honor the profound legacy of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji.
