Aizawl, 4th April.
A devastating thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain and hail wreaked havoc in Mizoram over the past three days, causing extensive damage to over 2,500 houses, schools, and government buildings, officials reported on Wednesday. A 45-year-old woman lost her life when a tree uprooted by strong winds fell upon her on Monday.

The powerful storm struck various parts of Mizoram between Sunday and Tuesday, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

According to officials from the state’s disaster management and rehabilitation department, the impact was particularly severe in North Mizoram’s Kolasib district, bordering Assam, where over 800 structures, including dwellings, schools, churches, and Anganwadi centers, were destroyed.

Aizawl district also suffered significant damage, with 632 dwelling houses impacted by the storm. Additionally, 15 churches in five districts, 17 schools, 11 relief camps, and several government buildings bore the brunt of the thunderstorm and hailstorm.

Despite the ongoing election model code of conduct, State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister K Sapdanga assured that the government would provide assistance to the affected individuals as permitted by existing laws.

He said that the state government had requested permission from the Election Commission to extend aid, with Chief Minister Lalduhoma also highlighting the urgency of providing assistance to those in need.
