Modi, Guterres Discuss Global Challenges on Sidelines of BRICS Summit

UNITED NATIONS – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, according to a read out issued by UN Spokesman’s office in New York.

Both leaders discussed global conflicts, multilateral reforms, sustainable development and emerging technologies, the read out stated.

Guterres congratulated Modi on India assuming the BRICS chairship for the fourth time, it said.

Both leaders underscored the importance of multipolarity and agreed on the need to reform multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council, to reflect contemporary global realities.

The meeting took place at Bharat Mandapam came as the international community continues to grapple with multiple conflicts, geopolitical tensions and challenges to global stability.

The meeting covered ongoing conflicts, freedom of navigation, sustainable development, human-centric artificial intelligence, progress in renewable energy and global food security.

They emphasized on freedom of navigation assumes significance amid continuing concerns over the security of vital maritime routes and their impact on international trade, energy supplies and global supply chains.

India has advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve conflicts and promote lasting peace and stability, Mr. Modi stated.

They also discussed the importance to ensure that technological progress, particularly in artificial intelligence, remains human-centric and contributes to inclusive and sustainable development.

The talks reflected the growing international focus on balancing innovation with ethical safeguards, accountability and the broader interests of humanity.

The issue of renewable energy and global food security also featured in the discussions, according to a press release issued by PMO.

It highlighted the need for coordinated international action to address climate change, energy transitions and the vulnerabilities faced by developing countries.

India’s chairmanship of BRICS came as the grouping seeks to strengthen cooperation among emerging economies and amplify the voice of the Global South.

New Delhi has emphasized the importance of a more representative and inclusive global governance system, including an expanded UN Security Council.

Their discussions also reflected the close engagement between India and the UN on issues ranged from sustainable development and climate action to peace, security and multilateral cooperation.

Modi has called for reforms in global institutions to make them more effective, representative and responsive to contemporary challenges.

He wished Guterres the very best for the remainder of his tenure as UNSG at the conclusion of their meeting.
