Bengaluru, 4th April.
Boosting the BJP and JD(S) alliance in Karnataka, independent MP Sumalatha Ambareesh from the Mandya Lok Sabha seat declared her support for the BJP on Wednesday, putting an end to speculation that she would run as an independent candidate.

Speaking at a meeting with her supporters in Mandya city, Sumalatha also revealed her intention to join the BJP. Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally called her during his visit to Bengaluru and urged her to support former CM and JD(S) state President H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Kumaraswamy is the NDA candidate from the Mandya Parliamentary seat, a move aimed at sending a strong message from the BJP and JD(S) alliance to the state, particularly the south Karnataka region. He had met with Sumalatha Ambareesh at her home to seek her support, after she defeated his son, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, in the 2019 general election in Mandya.

Sumalatha explained, “The BJP government at the Centre allocated Rs 4,000 crore in grants to the Mandya Parliamentary constituency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke to me and emphasized the importance of my decisions. He expressed the party’s need for my leadership.”

She added, “This is a sign of respect. Prime Minister Modi has elevated India’s status globally. There has been no corruption during his tenure.”

Sumalatha also mentioned her decision to sacrifice her current seat as a sitting MP, stating, “The average person may not grasp the complexities of politics. If I were to run as an independent candidate, who would benefit? A senior Congress leader stated that their party does not need me. After such a statement, how could I consider joining the Congress party?”

The Congress party has nominated industrialist Venkataramane Gowda, also known as Star Chandru, for the Mandya seat. The election is viewed as a direct competition between Deputy CM and Congress state President D.K. Shivakumar and JD(S) President and former CM Kumaraswamy.
