N Biren Singh adds six new ministers to Manipur’s cabinet

On Saturday, the N Biren Singh-led Manipur government inducted six new ministers into the state Cabinet, bringing the total cabinet strength to 12. Five are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and one is from the BJP’s ally, the Naga People’s Front (NPF).

Manipur Governor La Ganesan administered the oath of office and secrecy to the six ministers, according to NDTV. According to the report, senior party leaders Latpao Haokip, a minister in the previous BJP government, and Th Basanta Singh, a former IPS officer and son of former Union minister Chaoba Singh, have joined the BJP-led government in the state.
The Cabinet also included several young faces, including Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, L Susindro Meitei, and H Dingo Singh. Kasim Vasum, an NPF member, was sworn in as minister, according to the statement.

The Manipur Cabinet now includes 10 BJP ministers and two NPF ministers. The Cabinet expansion comes just a month after the N Biren Singh-led government retained power in the state for the second time in a row. Singh, who had previously been elected as the BJP legislature party leader, was sworn in as Manipur’s chief minister for the second time on March 21 at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
The governor also administered the oath to Singh’s rival for the top job, Thongam Biswajit Singh, and four other cabinet ministers. Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Govindas Konthoujam, and Nemcha Kipgen were all from the BJP, and Awngbow Newmai was from the NPF.
