Nambi Narayanan responds to criticism of his portrayal as a Hindu in his biopic, “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect”

New Delhi, 17th July.  In his biopic, “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect,” in which R. Madhavan plays his part, former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan has responded to criticism of his portrayal as a Hindu. On social media, a video clip from one of his interviews in which Nambi Narayanan questioned whether being a Hindu was a sin went viral.

On July 1, 2022, the book “Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” was published. The film was both written by and directed by R Madhavan. He has also portrayed Nambi Narayanan, the movie’s protagonist. The portrayal of Nambi Narayanan as a practicing Hindu in this movie has outraged the liberal and leftist media and film critics. Nambi Narayanan said in an interview, “It is funny occasionally. You are aware that Nambi Narayanan is depicted as a Hindu in a review. Nambi Narayanan is performing some Utsavam and reciting Suprabhatam, among other things. He’s a Brahmin Hindu by religion. I just had a question for you because I’m Hindu. I mean, I don’t feel bad for saying that. Is being a Hindu a sin?

Nambi Narayanan continued, “They will only depict me as a Hindu when my story is shown because I am one. They cannot label me as a Christian or a Muslim. So what exactly are we discussing? Is being a Brahmin a sin? That is a different question since I am not a Brahmin. Is it sinful? If there is a Brahmin man, you will simply shave him off. Numerous Brahmins have sacrificed their lives for this nation. Not merely one. I can provide a list. The point I’m trying to make is that we’re unnecessarily adding colour to the problem.

When asked if he had any political aspirations at the conclusion of the interview, Narayanan made the remarks. He responded that he would continue to be a scientist and that he had no interest in entering politics, but he then revealed that politics was being practiced in his name.

The support of politicians from two opposing ends of the ideological spectrum, Nambi Narayanan continued, is what matters to him more than any controversy. We view Narendra Modi as a BJP leader, not as the Prime Minister, he declared. I will inform you for your information. Neglect Narendra Modi. Do you realize how well-supported I’ve been by Kerala’s current Chief Minister? How does his support diminish? He no longer fights my case as much. So you’re going to call me a communist, then?

“You are not asking me that question, why? Because you have some kind of mind-set in this,” Nambi Narayanan said to the Journalist. You want to paint me with the BJP brush, etc. Just trying to be completely honest with you. Maybe I’m wrong, but if so, you should correct yourself in your subsequent inquiries or in your comprehension of the problem. You’ll discover it tomorrow, I’m sure. It might be a Shiv Sena member or it might be a party unrelated to mine. Don’t color me with them when they help me. I’m glad to say that Pinarayi Vijayan and Narendra Modi represent two opposite extremes. Don’t you think I have a reason to be happy if they both support me? Is this not evidence that my case has merit? If not, why the hell are these people coming and standing by me? I am therefore overjoyed about it and don’t feel inclined to identify with that political line.

It is noteworthy that in her review of the movie, critic Anupama Chopra voiced her disapproval of portraying Nambi Narayanan as a practising Hindu. “It’s admirable that the movie has highlighted Narayanan’s numerous accomplishments, but the screenplay repeatedly emphasises his patriotism and also leans pointedly into his religion,” she wrote in her review. The puja room at Narayanan’s house is where we first saw him. He prays when it counts. True to form, Narayanan is a Hindu nationalist.
