The award includes a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh for the 1st place, Rs. 3 lakh for the 2nd place, and Rs. 2 lakh for the 3rd place, along with a certificate of merit and a memento for the first two categories. In the Best Artificial Insemination Technician (AIT) category, the award consists of a certificate of merit and a memento only.

The applications were accepted through the online application portal, https://awards.gov.in, developed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), from August 15th, 2023, to October 15th, 2023. A total of 1770 applications were received.

The livestock sector is crucial to the Indian economy, accounting for one-third of the agriculture and allied sector GVA and having over 8% CAGR. Animal husbandry, dairying, and fisheries activities also play a significant role in generating farmer income, especially among landless, small, and marginal farmers, as well as women. Additionally, these activities provide cheap and nutritious food to millions of people.

Indigenous bovine breeds in India are strong and possess the genetic potential to contribute significantly to the national economy.

However, without a specific program for their development and conservation, their population has been declining, and their performance is currently below their potential.

Therefore, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, initiated the “Rashtriya Gokul Mission” in December 2014 as part of the National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development, with the aim of conserving and developing indigenous bovine breeds.
