New Delhi, 21st Sept. New chief justices were appointed on Saturday in seven high courts, including Delhi.

Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, currently heading the Himachal Pradesh High Court, has been transferred to serve as the chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

This transfer follows the Jharkhand government’s recent petition to the Supreme Court against the BJP-led Centre for not implementing the collegium’s earlier recommendation regarding Justice Rao.

The appointments came after the Supreme Court Collegium revised some of its July 11 recommendations on Tuesday.

Justice Manmohan, the acting chief justice of the Delhi High Court, has now been appointed as its chief justice, while Justice Rajiv Shakdher, a judge of the Delhi High Court, has been elevated to chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court ahead of his retirement on October 18.

The collegium also recommended that Justice G.S. Sandhawalia be appointed as the chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court upon his retirement at age 62; this recommendation is pending with the government.

In further appointments, Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar of the Bombay High Court has been named chief justice of the Kerala High Court, and Justice K.R. Shriram of the Bombay High Court has been appointed chief justice of the Madras High Court.

Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji from the Calcutta High Court has been made chief justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, and Justice Tashi Rabstan of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court will now serve as the chief justice of that court. Notably, Justice Rabstan will be the first chief justice from Ladakh, addressing the region’s lack of representation among high court judges.

Additionally, Justice Suresh Kumar Kait of the Delhi High Court has been elevated to chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and three judicial officers have been promoted to additional judges of the Madras High Court.
