In a major breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended Jalil Miah, a prime accused wanted in connection with the trafficking of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas into India through the northeastern borders. The arrest, made on Tuesday, marks a pivotal development in the ongoing battle against human trafficking syndicates operating in the region.

Jalil Miah, a resident of Tripura, had been evading law enforcement authorities until the NIA’s dedicated team successfully located and apprehended him. The NIA had previously offered a cash reward of ₹1 lakh for information leading to Jalil’s arrest, underscoring the severity of his alleged involvement in the illicit trafficking network.

According to NIA investigations, the trafficking operation facilitated the illegal entry of a substantial number of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas into India on a monthly basis, exploiting the porous Indo-Bangladesh border. Once in India, the victims were provided with forged documents and coerced into forced labor across various parts of the country.

The NIA’s relentless pursuit of human traffickers yielded significant results, with the arrest of thirty-three individuals earlier in the case. The agency, which took over the investigation from the Assam Special Task Force (STF), has since charged 24 accused in connection with the trafficking racket.

Jalil Miah emerged as a key figure in the syndicate, closely associated with other charged suspects, including Jiban Rudra Pal alias Jibon alias Suman, Juj Miah, and Shanto, all hailing from Tripura. Despite evading capture during the initial operation, evidence recovered from Jalil’s residence linked him to the trafficking network.

The NIA’s extensive crackdown in November 2023 led to the seizure of crucial evidence, including digital devices, foreign currency, and identity documents. Subsequent operations in December last year resulted in the arrest of four additional suspects, further exposing the intricate web of human traffickers operating across the region.

Efforts to apprehend remaining absconders are underway, with ongoing investigations aimed at unraveling the full extent of the trafficking racket. In a related development, the NIA conducted coordinated operations with state police forces and central intelligence agencies, resulting in the arrest of five individuals implicated in an international human trafficking and cyber fraud scheme.

The victims, primarily youths, were coerced into illegal activities such as fake call center operations and online fraud, orchestrated by foreign nationals and their accomplices within the trafficking syndicate.
