Niraj Sharma’s Apparel Sparks Political Controversy

Faridabad, 14th Feb.
As the assembly session approaches, tensions escalate between legislator Niraj Sharma and the assembly speaker. Yesterday, Sharma sent a letter to the speaker requesting clarity on whether his attire adhered to the assembly’s standards, referring to a photograph of BJP’s senior MP and Minister Anurag Thakur with the caption “Namo Again and Hattrick BJP” on his clothing.

Sharma, expressing concern, questioned why he faced restrictions while others, including lawmakers and parliamentarians, often appeared in the assembly wearing just a dhoti and a scarf.

He emphasized that his clothing, adorned with “Jai Siya Ram” and a swastika symbol, contained no objectionable content. However, the assembly office responded citing rules that prohibit the display of symbols or banners in the assembly, urging Sharma to comply.
In a follow-up letter, Sharma urged the speaker to clarify whether mentioning the Lord’s name was permissible and assured removal of any potentially objectionable elements.

Despite these exchanges, the speaker’s stance remains undisclosed.

Sharma, known for advocating local issues, had previously sought approval for development projects worth ₹28 crores, which were rejected by the Chief Minister.

Following repeated requests, Sharma resorted to wearing attire resembling a funeral shroud, featuring religious motifs and highlighting local issues, accusing the government of neglect and curbing his right to expression. Despite these actions, he was barred from attending the Republic Day celebrations and the Governor’s At-Home party, which Sharma denounced as excessive government overreach and a violation of his expressive rights.
