Nurse Raped and Killed in Uttarakhand; Accused Arrested

GG News Bureau
Dehradun, 16th August. A nurse was brutally raped and murdered while returning home from a private hospital in Uttarakhand, near the Uttar Pradesh border.

The victim, who was seen taking an e-rickshaw from Indra Chowk in Rudrapur on July 30, failed to reach her rented accommodation on Kashipur Road, Bilaspur. Her sister reported her missing the following day.

On August 8, Uttar Pradesh police discovered her body in an empty plot approximately 1.5 km from her home in Dibdiba village. An investigation led to the arrest of Dharmendra, a daily wage labourer from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, who was apprehended in Rajasthan. Police traced Dharmendra through the victim’s stolen mobile phone.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Manjunath TC, Dharmendra, who was intoxicated, attacked the nurse as she was about to enter her apartment. He dragged her to nearby bushes, raped, and strangled her with her own scarf. He also stole her phone and ₹3,000 from her purse.

This incident has sparked nationwide outrage, coinciding with protests over the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The brutal assault on the doctor has intensified calls for enhanced safety measures for medical personnel, with resident doctors across India demanding the passage of the Central Healthcare Protection Act to prevent such attacks.
