Kolkata, 17th Oct. Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis, who is credited with developing oral rehydration therapy, died on Sunday at a private hospital in Mumbai.
According to sources, Mahalanabis, 87, was suffering from a lung infection and other old-age ailments.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, he made headlines when he used an oral rehydration solution to save thousands of lives during a cholera outbreak in a refugee camp in Bangaon, West Bengal.
Oral rehydration therapy is a method of preventing and treating dehydration.
Dr. Apurba Ghosh, Director of the Institute of Child Health, expressed sadness at his death, saying Mahalanabis was a pioneer in the treatment of cholera and enteric diseases using low-cost methods.
“His contributions will forever be remembered,” Ghosh said.
